The movie is based on the German fairy tale "The Juniper Tree" by the Grimm Brothers. It was one of Nietzchka Keene's favorite childhood stories.

The film was actually initially shot in the summer of 1986 when Björk was 20 turning 21. During production however, Director Nietzchka Keene ran out of money and was unable to complete and release the film until 1990.
