In The Legend of the Blue Sea, Jun Ji Hyun plays a mermaid who travels to Seoul in search of the human man she loves, Lee Min Ho. The two get romantically involved as she struggles to acclimatise to life on land. The drama Legend of the Blue Sea was excellent! It's a lovely love story with a fantastical twist. This excellent drama combines romance, humour, and drama with a stunning couple who must face many challenges in order to find happiness. The drama alternates between two storylines, one set in the present and the other in the Joseon era. In a brief flashback, we learn about our protagonists' pasts in the historical section. Throughout the drama, the love tale between the human Dam Ryung and the mermaid Se Hwa is revealed piece by piece in the past. Their contemporary selves rejoin and rekindle their relationship in the present, which is where the primary action takes place.

Krystal Jung and Kim Sung Ryung played cameo roles who previously starred together with Lee Min Ho in Heirs (2013).
Cha Tae Hyun also makes a cameo appearances in this drama and he previously worked with Jun Ji Hyun in My Sassy Girl (2001)
Filming began on August 19, 2016 in Goesan, North Chungcheong Province, South Korea. The production team then flew to Palau to film underwater scenes. The cast and crew flew to Spain on September 11 where they filmed in A Coruña, Ribadeo, Lugo, Tossa de Mar and Castell de Santa Florentinain Canet de Mar, as well as Begur (Es Cau Swimming Pool), Sitges (Town Hall and other backdrops) and Barcelona (exteriors of Palau de la Música Catalana, etc.), among other places in Catalonia and Galicia (Spain). The first script reading was held on October 8, 2016, two months after production began, due to the busy schedules of the actors. It lasted three hours and covered the first four episodes.
This Drama series is also the first acting role for actress Jun Ji Hyun since she gave birth to her first child.
