IMDbThe Humming Fish's line "I hear things are just as bad up in Lake Erie" was originally in the book (except at least one British version), but was removed 18 years after it was published when Dr. Seuss was informed by two research associates from the Ohio Sea Grant Program about the cleanup of Lake Erie.
This is the first Dr. Seuss CBS television special to feature the short version of the 1971-1975 Cat in the Hat Productions logo with only the "Cat in the Hat doing tricks" sequence.
This is the only Dr. Seuss Cartoon Special made by Universal Studios that doesn't feature the Cat in the Hat in any capacity. The Cat appears as the title character in "The Cat in the Hat", and introduces each short in "Dr. Seuss on the Loose" which includes "The Sneetches", "The Zax" and "Green Eggs and Ham" and crosses over with the Grinch in "The Grinch Grinches the Cat in the Hat". The Cat would also appear in "Daisy-Head Mayzie" as well. The Cat does not appear in "Halloween is Grinch Night", "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", "Horton Hears A Who", or "Horton Hatches the Egg" as those were all produced by Warner Bros Studios.
The Truffula Trees produce assorted colors of material. About halfway into the special, both the Truffula Trees and the Thneeds we see are pink.
"The Once-ler: Then, oh, baby, oh! How my business did grow! Now chopping trees one at a time was too slow! So I promptly invented my Super-Axe-Hacker, which whacked off four truffula trees in one smacker! We were making thneeds four times as fast as before! And my profits, incidentally, were soaring galore!"
"The Once-ler: And all that the Lorax left here in this mess was a small pile of rocks with one word. Boy: [reading it] "Unless?" The Once-ler: Yes. "Unless." Boy: What's an unless? The Once-ler: [sung] Just a far away word/just a far away thought... Boy: A thought about what? About something I ought? The Once-ler: [sung] Well... A thought about something that somebody ought/a thought about something... that somebody... ought. [spoken] The Once-ler: Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing's going to get better. It's not."
