This is the only Herbie movie without the George Bruns original theme.
The road used for the race scene between Horace and Herbie is called Golden State Highway. Up until 1968, it was part of the historic Highway 99 until the highway was retired and mostly flooded over by a dam and reservoir leaving only the small section seen in the movie. It is also worth mentioning that this was one of the roads taken by James Dean on the day he was killed. This road, located just north of Burbank off Interstate 5, is commonly used in Hollywood movies.
The futuristic car that Donny Shots (Mickey Dolenz) drives up in at the race was originally built for the Logan's Run TV series and was also used in the Tom Petty music video for You Got Lucky
Horace The Hate Bug is currently own by a private owner.
"Jim Douglas: [Talking about Herbie] Well he uh... He becomes like his owner, and helps them get what they need. Alex Davis: So... [Turns attention towards Hank] Alex Davis: It wasn't Herbie that whipped out to that secluded spot, locked the doors and all that, it was you, trying to get me alone! Hank Cooper: Me? No... It was the car... Jim Douglas: [laughing] Herbie did that to me too. It's how I met my wife."
"[Simon and Rupert are being arrested] Simon Moore III: Hey, Alex! I'll give you a call. Alex Davis: You're only allowed *one*."
