According to a September 1952 Hollywood Reporter news item, Glenn Ford suffered three broken ribs during production when he was thrown against a tree by a horse. Filming was suspended for approximately five weeks.
Chill Wills (who plays John Gage in this film) was also in The Alamo (1960) playing Beekeeper.
The sixth of eight straight westerns starring Julie Adams that were released in 1952 and 1953. The first was Bend of the River (1952) and the last was Wings of the Hawk (1953). Her co-stars included some of the biggest names in Hollywood at the time. In addition to Glenn Ford, there was James Stewart (with whom she developed a lifelong friendship), Rock Hudson, Tyrone Power and Van Heflin. Her string of westerns was broken when she added a stylish presence to the 3-D cult classic Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954).
Opening credits: The story of Texas symbolizes the spirit of independence so close to the heart of all Americans. Her people fought for Mexico's freedom from Spain and lived peacefully as a separate province until... ... General Santa Anna seized the presidency of Mexico. They were then faced with the prospect of military government or war. General Sam Houston was entrusted with the task of mapping a course of action that would determine the future of Texas ....
The film was criticized for giving a very one-sided account of the siege of the Alamo, and for casting a white boy as Carlos.
"General Sam Houston: I have just received a dispatch that Santa Anna has captured San Antonio. Colonel Travis, with less than 200 men, has withdrawn across the river to the Alamo to prepare for its defense. At the moment, that is the only military force between the Mexican army and the Sabine River... and those men need help!"
"Lt. Col. Travis: How do you feel, Jim? Jim Bowie: I'd feel a lot better if somebody moved me out on that wall. I'll never get any shootin' done in here. Lt. Col. Travis: Don't be too sure of that. There's a lot of 'em left out there. Some of them might even pay you a visit. Sam: Just bring 'em in! Me and Mr. Bowie all ready for 'em. Lt. Col. Travis: I don't think we won't have to bring 'em in, Sam. It looks as if they intend to come in on their own."
