David Ogden Stiers plays the conductor of the symphony orchestra where Richard plays violin. Stiers has worked as a guest conductor with real-life symphony orchestras.
Tom Hanks described this film as "Not a very good movie. It doesn't have any real, clear focus to it. It isn't about anything in particular that you can honestly understand. It made no money at all."
The Central Intelligence game that Dabney Coleman and Charles Durning play on each other is loosely based on the comic strip Spy vs. Spy.
Due to limited marketing, the film was not a big hit at the box office. Because of this, no soundtrack album was released at the time. However, in 2018, after 33 years of requests - a third of a century - a limited special edition soundtrack CD was released. It contained 18 tracks plus a 20-page booklet.
The music played by the orchestra (when the conductor scolds Drew for interrupting with his own composition) is from Scheherazade by Rimsky-Korsakov. Random phrases of Scheherazade also appear during the "tuning up" section of the opening score.
"Maddy: Are you OK? You seem tense. Richard: Oh, no, no, no, I'm not, I'm not tense. Well, I did pass out today... and got hit in the head by a baseball... and brushed my teeth with shampoo... then butchered Rimsky- Korsakov in front of 1,500 people, and my clothes fell apart. But I'm not *tense*."
"Paula: Oh, don't talk about Morris. All he cares about is his practical jokes. Richard: I know, I know, I know, he's a percussionist, but still, that doesn't mean he's not a nice guy."
