IMDbActor Michael Dunn died in London during production, but had completed all of his scenes. He was just 39 years old.
According to Tom Baker, while filming he and Willie Ingram, who went by the stage name "Popeye" for his strange ability to make his eyes pop far out of their sockets, used to frequent a bar across the street between shooting scenes. During one such outing a waitress made it clear through her attitude that she didn't approve of Baker, who is white, being friends with Ingram who is black. So to get back at her Ingram would make his eyes pop out when she would pass the table causing her to completely freak out, and then go back to normal while he and Baker would pretend nothing happened as she tried to point it out to other waitresses and patrons.
At about halfway through the movie the circus performers taunt Lynch by saying "we accept you... He's one of us ". This seems to be a reference to similar lines from Tod Browning's 1932 movie Freaks (1932).
The amusement park in the film is the Battersea Fun Fair. It was located on nine of the Battersea Park's 37 acres in South London. It operated from 1951 to 1974. Its demise was hastened by the deaths of five juveniles in May 1972 when the wooden roller coaster named The Big Dipper suffered an accident.
Several actual freaks were brought in from America to be featured in this film.
"Hedi: Wow! Who said girls are the weaker sex?"
"Dr. Nolter: We don't know yet how these mutations happen. But, we do know that mutations can be induced. So, that instead of endless accidental changes, we may be able to create the mutations of our choice and change our species or improve it."
