The $1,600,000 ($13,350,000 in 2016) budget of the film was financed by producer Samuel Goldwyn Jr. through a personal loan of $1,200,000 from the Bank of America, co-signed by his father, Samuel Goldwyn, and the rest from himself.
Adolphe Menjou was originally cast in the film but was replaced when he tore ligaments in his leg and groin.
According to Olivia De Havilland, Alan Ladd was a bit afraid to star in this movie because of Michael Curtiz's reputation to be harsh with actors.
David Ladd gets an introducing credit during the opening credits but he had previously appeared with Alan Ladd in the 1957 Warner Brothers film The Big Land.
"Jeb Burleigh: I'd like a little respect. I told you before I don't like people I'm talkin' to to walk away from me. Look at me! You look at me when I talk to you. John Chandler: I'm lookin', but I don't see anything."
"Dr. Enos Davis (Quaker): Mr. Chandler, sometimes I wish I was a minister instead of a doctor. A minister can give you hope, a doctor can only give you facts. John Chandler: Is it hopeless? Dr. Enos Davis (Quaker): No. No. There is always hope... and faith. Does he have faith Mr. Chandler? John Chandler: Some... Dr. Enos Davis (Quaker): Cause they need a lot of it, though they can become awfully bitter. and bitterness can become a bad habit. John Chandler: Same as in war."
