Gary Oldman said in an interview that after watching this movie as a little kid, he was so impressed by the movie, especially by Malcolm McDowell performance that he decided he wanted to become an actor.
Opening credits prologue: NOT FOR THE PROUD MAN APART FROM THE RAGING MOON I WRITE ON THESE SPINDRIFT PAGES NOR FOR THE TOWERING DEAD WITH THEIR NIGHTINGALES & PSALMS BUT FOR THE LOVERS, THEIR ARMS ROUND THE GRIEFS OF THE AGES, WHO PAY NO PRAISE OR WAGES NOR HEED MY CRAFT OR ART.-DYLAN THOMAS.
When Bryan Forbes was running the studio the powers that be didn't want him to direct as there was so much other work to do. At the end of his three years he found this story and wanted to turn it into a film but the studio had no money. Bryan was so keen on the story that he said he would do it for nothing and he'd get a cast who'd work for very little. It was shot very fast in a derelict house. The result was that his wife, Nannette Newman was nominated for a BAFTA for Best Actress.
The title comes from a phrase in a Dylan Thomas poem
Anne Dyson's debut.
"Bruce Pritchard: Hey, don't cry. There's nothing to cry about. Jill Matthews: I'm not. Bruce Pritchard: It's no good being in love if it makes you cry. Jill Matthews: I'm not crying. Bruce Pritchard: I only want to make you happy. Jill Matthews: Oh, you do. Bruce Pritchard: What? Jill Matthews: You do. Bruce Pritchard: That's why you're crying? Because you're happy? You're going to be crying for all your married life, then."
"Bruce Pritchard: It does matter. Everything matters. If I don't believe that, I've had it."
