Jola, the Yule Cat, takes inspiration from Icelandic folklore. In Iceland there are 13 "Santas" called the "Yule Lads" who used to be a mischievous bunch, but in the present day they give gifts to children in the 13 days leading up to Christmas Day. Their mother, Grýla, is still an evil folklore character who kidnaps badly behaved children and eats them. The Yule Cat is hers and eats children who don't get new clothes for Christmas. However, he is different in appearance than the Jola in this film. The Icelandic name for the Yule Cat is Jólakötturinn.
