TRIVIA AND POPULAR DIALOGUES

Trivia

In the scene where Pope Kiril I (Anthony Quinn) prays over the body of the Jewish man, he recites the Shema. However, rather than say "Adonai," he says, "Hashem." This is because "Adonai" is traditionally only said when one is actually at prayer, and not simply reciting a prayer in a secular context, as in during a performance (specifically, in a movie).

Although it is never mentioned nor indicated at any point in the movie, the story is set 20 years in the future.

The papal name of the Pope who dies during the movie is Pius XIII. It is never spoken during the movie, but can be seen etched in reverse on his papal seal before it is ceremoniously destroyed.

Alex North re-used the opening fanfare he wrote for 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), but which had been rejected by Stanley Kubrick, as one of the main themes in his score.

Two unlikely papal events (having not occurred for many centuries) are depicted, which would come to pass in reality within a generation. A new Pope is not only not Italian for the first time in over 450 years, but also from Eastern Europe. This came true in 1978 with the election of Pope John Paul II from Poland. The Pope decides to be known by a completely new papal name, Kiril (or Cyril), which had not happened since Pope Lando in 913 A.D. In March 2013, Jorge Bergoglio ascended to the papacy and took the new name Pope Francis.

Popular Dialogues

"George Faber: Were you permitted to practice your ministry as a priest? Kiril Lakota: No, I - I practiced it without permission among my fellow prisoners. George Faber: Do you see any hope then for the day when Christian faith, or more specifically the Roman Catholic faith, may be practiced freely in Marxist countries? Kiril Lakota: I have no inside information as to how the Kingdom of God is going to be established."

"The Elder Pope: There is a legend about you. That once you were asked to deny the faith, and they tied up seven priests and shot them, shot them before your eyes. And still you would not deny the faith. Is that story true? Kiril Lakota: I try not to look back on that, or other days, Holiness. The Elder Pope: God is with you, my Brother. I believe that God has sent you. Trust us to make the best use of you. But first, you must be honored. [Hold up the red cap of a cardinal] The Elder Pope: Kneel. [Lakota kneels] The Elder Pope: You are created cardinal-priest in the title of Saint Athanasius."
