Jonathan Winters' final performance. He died of natural causes just nine days after his final recording session and this film was dedicated to his memory.
A third film was planned for a 2014 or 2015 release. However, due to this movie's "underwhelming" box-office performance (it earned over $348 million worldwide), and the death of Jonathan Winters, the idea of another sequel was scrapped in favor of developing Smurfs: The Lost Village (2017), a completely animated reboot, which somewhat uses the plot that "The Smurfs 3" would've had. Ironically, it did only half of the worldwide business that this movie did.
When Gargamel says that Smurfette is his daughter, he then says, "Search your feelings, you know it to be true", quoting Darth Vader's speech from Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980).
Sofía Vergara filmed a cameo reprising her role of Odile Anjelou from The Smurfs (2011), but the scene was ultimately deleted.
WILHELM SCREAM: When Vanity Smurf hits the mirror, after flying out of the portal.
"[from trailer] Papa: It doesn't matter where you came from. What matters is who you choose to be."
"Papa: Listen up, smurfs. I saved water form the last blue moon for just such an occasion. I was able to smurf it into these smurf-portation crystals. Brainy Smurf: Oh, so you don't need a portal. Very clever, Papa. Papa: Smurf-xactly."
