The chase inside the ferry terminal was filmed in the San Pedro Municipal Ferry Terminal in Los Angeles. The building now houses the Los Angeles Maritime Museum.
The movie is a follow-up to The House on 92nd Street (1945), which uses the same semi-documentary style to tell the story of an FBI investigation. Lloyd Nolan plays FBI Inspector George A. Briggs in both films.
June Haver was put on suspension for refusing the role of Judy Stiles. She was quoted saying: "After playing that role, I won't have any name".
Twentieth Century-Fox remade this story as House of Bamboo (1955). It was directed by Samuel Fuller, and starred Robert Stack, Robert Ryan, and Shirley Yamaguchi. Joseph MacDonald served as director of photography on both movies.
Joan Chandler was originally cast as Mark Stevens' fiancee, but this character did not appear in the completed film.
