The Substitute is a film that explores the struggles of substitute teaching in a rough neighborhood on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. Failed novelist-turned-substitute teacher Lucio arrives in this milieu and attempts to inspire the class to take an interest in literature, but his efforts are mostly in vain. The narrative takes a turn when a major drug bust occurs in his class, and Lucio becomes embroiled in a political and social quagmire involving the mayor and local drugs kingpin, both running for office. Despite its central idea of the contradiction between rhetoric and physical action, the film fails to do much with it, instead bogging down the protagonist with redundant side quests. The film's strengths lie in its eloquent visual touches, such as a one-take chase through back alleyways or the contrast between Lucio's modernist apartment and the rundown school he works in. However, the film retreats too often to classroom polemics and lacks focus and purpose. With more direction, The Substitute could have been something greater than the sum of its parts.
