STORY

Story
John Ford weaves three "Judge Priest" stories together to form a good- natured exploration of honour and small-town politics in the South around the turn of the century. Judge William Priest is involved variously in revealing the real identity of Lucy Lake, reliving his Civil War memories, preventing the lynching of a youth and contesting the elections with Yankee Horace K. Maydew.

Director Alejandro G. Iñárritu said that this film was the main inspiration for his entire film career and that he watched it over and over as a child and used it, especially its morality and characterizations, as a model for the kind of films he wanted to make.

According to a 1968 interview with John Ford, this is his favorite of all of his films.

A sequel to John Ford's Judge Priest (1934), with Charles Winninger replacing Will Rogers as Judge Billy Priest and Stepin Fetchit reprising his role as Jeff Poindexter. Fetchit's film career essentially ended with this movie, until he briefly came out of retirement 19 years later.

The final production of John Ford's independent Argosy Films. The box office failure of the film contributed to Argosy's demise.
