The real-life "Batman and Robin", officers David Greenberg and Robert Hantz, had a 97% conviction rate and became legends in New York City. They received every commendation and citation that the NYPD could award.
In early 2011 director Edgar Wright requested that the film be made available via DVD on demand from the Warner Archives, which obliged accordingly.
Screenwriter Lorenzo Semple Jr., who wrote this film, also wrote the original "Batman" TV pilot episode "Batman (1966)," and was a script consultant to the "Batman (1966)" television series--two projects also containing characters named "Batman" and "Robin".
The two real-life policemen, David Greenberg and Robert Hantz, upon whose exploits this film is based appear in bit parts as detectives and in news footage.
As shown in the film, the real-life "Batman and Robin" cops actually would use ropes and grappling hooks to scale buildings and leap onto drug dealers and other criminals when they least expected it.
"Detective: 21 Precinct? That's our precinct. When did you start working here? David Greenberg: Well, to tell you the truth, we started working here tomorrow."
"Robert Hantz: How legal is this? David Greenberg: Legal? Offhand, I'd rate it somewhere between murder and kissing a cocker spaniel."
