As research, director Nicole Kassell interviewed sex offenders, as well as therapists who worked with them.
The part of Mary Kay was originally intended for a 45-year-old white male. Kevin Bacon recommended Eve for the part, and she was hired without a single audition.
The movie was released in the U.S. just nine days after California put its sex offender register online. Under "Megan's Law," named after 7-year-old Megan Kanka, who was abducted and killed by a sex offender who lived next door, parents must be able to check whether any convicted sex offenders live in their neighborhood.
This is the second movie in which Kevin Bacon has played a child molester. The first was Sleepers (1996).
Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick are married in real life. They also worked together in Lemon Sky (1988), Pyrates (1991) and Murder in the First (1995). Then he has directed her on Losing Chase (1996), Loverboy (2005) and episodes of The Closer. And she has directed him on an episode of City on a Hill and Story of a Girl (2017).
"Walter: They think I'm crazy. Rosen: Do you think you're crazy? Walter: You know, talking to you is like riding on a fucking merry-go-round. Rosen: That's a marvelous image, Walter. Because by going in circles, we find things we missed the first time around."
"Vickie: So, what did you do? Walter: I molested little girls. Vickie: [laughs in disbelief] Walter: 12 years in prison is no joke."
