The number 4 is considered unlucky in Chinese culture as it sounds similar to the word for death in both Mandarin and Cantonese.
The temple was inspired by the Bok Kai Temple, a historical landmark in Marysville, California that was built by the local Chinese community in 1880. A special thanks is made in the credits.
As explained in various interviews, director Domee Shi took inspiration from four Japanese anime regarding the film's creation: Fruits Basket (2001), Ranma ½ (1989), Sailor Moon (1992), and Inuyasha (2000). The first two in particular share themes of adolescence and transformations in wacky situations with the film.
The family's nickname for Meilin, "mei-mei", is Mandarin for "little sister".
Ming was originally planned to have been incredibly happy that Mei turned into a red panda due to it being a good luck charm for the temple, and would have planned to monetize Mei's red panda form for profit. This direction for Ming was scrapped due to Domee Shi feeling it made her too much of a "one-note villain".
"[to Mei] Ming: The farther you go, the prouder I'll be."
"[running through the streets of Toronto, Mei as a giant red panda stops in front of the convenience store run by Deavon, a teen Mei's attracted to] Meilin Lee: AWOOGA!"
