Hamish Blake lacquered his mullet before shaving it off to keep it in one piece. He and radio partner Andy Lee then hired it out for charity, calling it 'Monies, for Mullets, for Mates'.
The film was nominated for 7 New Zealand Film and TV Awards in 2012 including Best Film, Best Director - Robert Sarkies, Best Actor - Bret McKenzie, Best Cinematography and Best Production Design. In the end, the film won two gongs, for Best Editing and Best Visual Effects.
The film was financed in association with Fulcrum Media Finance and was produced with the assistance of the staff of the Coastal Otago Area Office of the Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai New Zealand.
Second feature film from the brotherly team of Robert Sarkies and Duncan Sarkies after their debut movie 'Scarfies' (1999).
