The first non-short television series to use rotoscoping animation for every episode.
The show's co-creator Katie Purdy was a writer for BoJack Horseman and Raphael Bob-Waksberg asked her to develop a show idea. Purdy lived in Guadalajara Mexico for a couple years growing up and had been into shamanistic medicine so she based a show around that.
Pre-animation filming was done entirely on a black 12 ft by 12 ft soundstage with minimal set design or props; for example, what would later become a car scene featured an actor sitting on a car seat with a steering wheel on a C-stand, but not much else. Rosa Salazar loved filming this way because the minimal set-ups meant shooting scenes could happen much more quickly and her energy wouldn't be wasted waiting for set-ups.
The story takes place in San Antonio. First scene is downtown San Antonio Texas.
The show has Joanna Calo and Lauren Otero of mixed Latino backgrounds on the writing staff and consulted with experts on Mesoamerican tribal traditions.
