Trivia

Producer and co-writer Robert P. Eaton was married to actress Lana Turner from 1965 to 1969. In April 1969, Turner filed for divorce from Eaton upon discovering he had been unfaithful to her.

Producer Betty Jo Stephens was married to businessman and scientist John Stephens, founder of the Excel Mineral Company and creator of Jonny Cat kitty litter. She eventually became the CEO of the company and a was powerful presence in Democratic circles. A bag of Jonny Cat can be seen beside 'The Whale's' desk when Duncan Jax breaks into his lair to recruit him. Betty Jo Stephens passed away in August, 2018. In 2024, the couple's ocean-view estate in Santa Barbara, California, was listed for sale by her daughter for $88 million.

When casting him as the lead, the producers thought Louis Dula's name (pronounced 'Hula') sounded weird and asked if he'd consider changing it for the film. In order to protect his respected reputation in theater, Dula agreed, choosing the name of long time British and Hollywood leading man and supporting actor Ian Hunter, who had retired from movies in 1963 and died in 1975.

At the very end of the closing credits, the words "For John Thaddeus" appear as a dedication to John Thaddeus Stephens, the grandson of producer Betty Jo Stephens and her husband John Stephens, the kitty litter magnates who largely financed the film.
