The opening shot of "Unstable" reveals a modern house and introduces the protagonist, Ellis Dragon (Rob Lowe), a genius CEO of his company, which develops materials to help revive the environment. However, since the death of his wife, Ellis has been struggling emotionally. His CFO tells him that he needs to present his latest project to the board of directors or risk losing his position. Ellis' former assistant, Malcolm, convinces his socially shy son, Jackson, to come back and help his father. Jackson, a flutist, is interested in biotech work, but he resents his father's lifelong desire to shape him in his image. Ellis is working on a landscaping crew when Jackson arrives, and they head to an office karaoke night to bond. Jackson also meets the company's researchers, including Ruby and the shy Luna, who connect with Ellis on a nerdy level. Meanwhile, Ellis' erratic behavior raises concern, and the company's board-appointed therapist goes missing.
