The film was partly inspired from 1978 classic Trishul.
It was mentioned that Subhash Ghai grew very uncomfortable when he heard that Rajnikanth and Madhuri had developed a close friendship during the making of the film . Ghai had got Madhuri to sign the film because it was directed by his former assistant. In those days Subhash Ghai had become Madhuri's new godfather after he discovered her on the sets of Karma. But before he could get her to sign a exclusive contract,Madhuri had went ahead and signed a few small films.
Rajanikant recommended Kannada actress Bharati wife of super star Vishnuvardhan to play the role of his mother, the 'Dakshin' wife of Khulbhushan Kharbanda. Bharati acted in two more HIndi movies in supporting roles during the 1990s - Izzatdaar opposite Dilip Kumar and Khel opposite Vijayendra Ghatge. All 3 movies had Madhuri in the lead.
