Godfrey Cambridge was selected to the play the role of General Idi Amin Dada Oumee, but died on the set from a heart attack early in the filming. Julius Harris took over the part.

Barry Norman, on his BBC show Film '72 (1971), said of Kirk Douglas and Dame Elizabeth Taylor's brief appearances, "Drop your chocolates and you will miss them!"

Burt Lancaster plays statesman (and future two-time Prime Minister) Shimon Peres, Peres is a distant cousin of Lauren Bacall, who was also Lancaster's friend.

Burt Lancaster was born a decade before the real Shimon Peres was.

It was in production at about the same time as Raid on Entebbe (1976), another television production about the same incident. The shows aired on American television less than a month apart.
