On December 2022 it was reported to the media that Joaquin Phoenix's performance as Napoleon was so powerful that Sir Ridley Scott had to rewrite the script to adjust for him.
Reunites Sir Ridley Scott with Joaquin Phoenix after Gladiator (2000). In both films, Phoenix plays an important historical figure (Emperor Commodus in 2000 and Napoleon in this movie).
The trailer shows several of the most relevant events of Napoleon's rise to power and empire: the Battle of the Pyramids (1798) in Egypt, the Battle of Austerlitz of 1805 (Austrian troops falling in the ice), the Siege of Toulon and possibly the Battle of Waterloo. The cannons shooting on the crowds show Napoleon's reprisal of the 18th Vendimaire Insurrection.
The trailer depicts Napoleon's coronation as a full recreation of the painting Le Sacré de Napoleon (Coronation of Napoleon), by painter Jacques-Louis David, who appears in the credits as played by actor Sam Crane.
Jodie Comer was cast as Empress Joséphine but dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. Vanessa Kirby replaced her. Ben Miles, Coulancourt in the movie, played a Kirby's lover in seasons 1 and 2 of The Crown (2016).
