Canute's complicated relationship with his father Sweyn could be seen as tragic in hindsight: the medieval chronicles attribute Sweyn as having been abused by his own father Harald I, aka Harald Bluetooth. Emma of Normandy, wife of Canute, reported in her biography Encomium Emma Reginae that Sweyn was hated by his father.
"Askeladd: A man, slave to gold, holds a whip... And beats the slave he bought with that gold as if to claim HE is the master. He just doesn't see it for himself. Every living human being is a slave to something."
"Thors: I must rely on a sword like this, because I am not yet a master. A true warrior doesn't need a sword."
