Gina Gershon told Femme Fatales magazine how she decided to make this movie. She had just gotten back from New Orleans where she said she met a "weird voodoo girl" and hung out with a group of strange people. When she flew home, she saw a black cat waiting for her on her window sill just as the script for this movie was delivered to her. She thought signs were telling her to accept the role. Gershon realized later that's probably not the best way to choose a movie.
Filmed in Charleston, South Carolina.
Gina Gershon said that while preparing to film a voodoo ritual scene, actors were rehearsing a chant. Suddenly a producer walked up and told everyone he did didn't want any singing or chanting. When Gershon pointed out that it's part of the voodoo religion, the producer said, "I don't want any of that voodoo shit in here." That really confused Gershon since the title of the movie was Voodoo Dawn.
