Bioko (also spelled "Bioco", in Europe) was formerly called "Fernando Pó" during the period of Portuguese colonization. The Portuguese navigator Fernão do Pó was the first European to visit the island in 1472 and he named it Formosa Flora ('Beautiful Flower'). In 1494 it was renamed Fernando Pó in his honor after being claimed as a colony by the Portuguese.
