Before the movie's official release, the film maker and producers attempted a "whisper campaign". Doing such things as leaving several VHS copies lying around a VHS convention in Pennsylvania, and throwing copies out of car windows while driving around Baltimore, in hopes of sparking conversation about the film.
Many of the fake TV commercials were written around stock footage that the filmmakers acquired for very little money.
Producer Jimmy George confirmed in a 2018 screening of the film that "WNUF TV28" was actually inspired by Baltimore's WNUV TV54, a similar TV station that was independently owned until the mid-90s (when it would become a UPN affiliate, then later The WB and presently The CW). George even stated that in the scripting phase, they kept accidentally typing "WNUV" instead of "WNUF."
The Webber house scenes were shot in two days while the news anchor scenes were filmed in a single day.
The bulk of the props used in this film were left over from previous movies.
