Sir Sean Connery was greatly impressed by Sir Ralph Richardson, who he has often described since as his favorite actor.
Ralph Richardson's butler in this film is called Baines. This is a reference to Richardson's performance 16 years earlier in the classic "The Fallen Idol (1948)," in which he played the French ambassador's butler who was also named Baines.
There were some concerns over Sean Connery being cast as a villain, owing to the risk of his heroic image being compromised.
During the swimming sequence on the raft with Gina Lollobrigida, Sir Sean Connery's voice was dubbed.
The title is based on the expression, "man of straw", which describes a situation in which one person serves as a front for another in activities that may or may not be legal.
"Charles Richmond: All our years of marriage she never once raised her voice at me, never tried to wheedle anything out of me. She was... remarkable. Maria Marcello: You were a lucky man. Charles Richmond: She died in great pain. A kind nature is no defense in sickness and death. So... what's the point of it?"
"Maria Marcello: He was telling me about your mother. Anthony 'Tony' Richmond: How she liked his strength after my father's weakness? How she loved him, despite his wealth? Maria Marcello: He was so sad when he talked about her dying. Anthony 'Tony' Richmond: Did he tell you what he said the minute after she died? Maria Marcello: No... Anthony 'Tony' Richmond: He said, "You gave me everything, and took nothing. You were a very stupid woman." Let's not get sentimental, shall we?"
