James A Michener, the celebrated novelist has long claimed (and bragged) that at 37, he was the oldest private serving in the army during the second world war. This movie and the book on which it was based prove Orry-Kelly far surpassed that boast when he was drafted at age 45 and served until the army finally released those over the age of 45.(He was 46 by then!)
This is a very enjoyable documentary, but the representation of Cary Grant needs to be taken with a pinch of salt, both in relation to his relationship with Orry-Kelly and his sexuality. Grant may have been bisexual, but biographers other than Marc Elliot (featured in the documentary) do not denigrate his relationships with women in the way this film does. Cary Grant was a complex personality, while this is all black and white.
