IMDbDil Chahta Hai is one of those iconic Bollywood movies, which makes it to every "watch it before you die" list. Because that's what it is - a cult classic. With actors like Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, and Akshaye Khanna, before their prime, the movie is a superb depiction of young adult friendships, especially in the modern era. With a unique charm even to this date, we can but imagine what impact it would have created when it released in 2001, a time when modern romances and friendships were rare in Hindi movies. This Farhan Akhtar directorial is probably one of his finest. It strikes the perfect balance between showing the bromance between three upper class men and their problems. This was one of the first instances when Hindi cinema was not uncomfortable showing riches on screen, in a way that was normalised. And, this is one of the reasons why Dil Chahta Hai is such a cult film today.

Aamir Khan's ex wife Kiran Rao plays Deepa's friend in the scene when Khan's character hides behind the plant.
Farhan Akhtar originally wrote the movie by casting Akshaye Khanna as Akash, Hrithik Roshan as Siddhart and Saif Ali Khan as Sameer. When Hrithik Roshan turned the role down, it went to Abhishek Bachchan. After Abhishek's exit, Farhan approached Aamir Khan who was going though a lean phase at the time. Aamir Khan insisted on playing Akash and Akshaye Khanna graciously agreed to swap roles.
The scene where Sid comforts Deepa by telling her his philosophy about "it being impossible to grasp the grains of sand with a tighter clasp" is a subtle homage to the poem 'A Dream Within A Dream' by Edgar Allan Poe.
Saif Ali Khan initially refused the film but was persuaded by Dimple Kapadia to sign on.
Producer's and Director's opened offers to Saif Ali Khan and Akshay Khanna's declining career after the success of this film.
"Siddharth Sinha: Take this sand for instance, the tighter you try to hold it, the more it slips out of our hand."
"Akash Malhotra: Dad, there is more to life than just signing checks. Akash's father: Really... What is that? Akash Malhotra: I don't know, but as soon as I do, you will be the first to know."
