Highlights
  • Airtel has introduced three voice-only prepaid plans starting at Rs 185
  • All three plans include unlimited calls, 300 SMS and free HelloTunes
  • The Rs 203 plan offers 30 days of validity, while the Rs 206 plan follows a calendar-month cycle

Airtel has launched three new prepaid recharge plans that offer calling and SMS benefits without bundled mobile data. Starting at Rs 185, the plans are for users who mainly use their phones for calls and text messages. The move follows recent Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) rules requiring telecom operators to offer voice-and-SMS-only recharge options. Here’s what Airtel’s new plans offer and whether they make sense for consumers.

Airtel voice-only plans: price, validity and benefits

Airtel’s three new prepaid plans differ mainly in their validity periods. All three offer unlimited local, STD and roaming calls, 300 SMS and free HelloTunes, and none include mobile data.

One thing to note is that the plans appear under the ‘Truly Unlimited’ section in the Airtel app, towards the end of the list. Users may need to scroll down or search for the exact recharge amount to find them.

PlansValidityFeatures
Rs 185 28 daysUnlimited calls, 300 SMS, free HelloTunes
Rs 203 30 daysUnlimited calls, 300 SMS, free HelloTunes
Rs 206 Calendar monthUnlimited calls, 300 SMS, free HelloTunes

The Rs 185 plan is the cheapest option of the three, while the Rs 203 plan offers two additional days of validity for Rs 18 more. The Rs 206 plan follows a standard calendar-month cycle, allowing users to renew their recharge on the corresponding date each month, subject to that date being available.

These plans are a result of TRAI’s latest amendment to the Telecom Consumer Protection Regulations, which aims to give users more choice when recharging their phones. The regulator found that voice-and-SMS-only plans were available in limited numbers and were largely focused on longer validity periods, leaving people who did not need mobile data with not much options.

Under the new rules, telecom operators must offer voice-and-SMS-only plans matching the validity periods of their bundled voice, SMS and data plans that run for 30 days or less. They must also offer a plan that renews on the same date each month, along with at least one longer-validity voice-and-SMS-only option corresponding to an existing bundled plan. The rules came into effect on October 21, 2026.

Are Airtel’s new voice-only plans worth it?

There’s no doubt that the new plans are helpful to a significant subset of users. These plans are beneficial for older users and feature-phone owners who mainly rely on calls, as well as people who have Wi-Fi at home and rarely use mobile data while travelling. They also offer a cheaper way for users with a secondary SIM to keep their number active, which doesn’t need an active data plan.

There’s another side to this too, as many people now rely on internet-based services such as WhatsApp and app-based calling, which still require data when they are away from Wi-Fi. Voice-only plans may be more useful in hilly areas and regions with patchy internet, where a reliable cellular voice connection may be more crucial, provided the operator has coverage.

Cost is another key consideration here, as not everyone can afford to spend Rs 350 or more a month on a regular prepaid plan, particularly if they do not need data. With telecom tariffs consistently increasing in recent years, these lower-cost options give users more flexibility, although their value ultimately depends on individual needs.
