We recently reviewed the Tecno Megabook T1, a laptop that impressed us with its value for money. Now, its sister company, Infinix, has another option for us in the form of the Inbook Y2 Plus. This laptop proves to be a solid performer for everyday users who primarily use their devices for tasks like browsing, watching videos, attending classes and meetings, and even occasional gaming. The laptop is designed for those seeking a budget-friendly device that delivers excellent value. So, does the Inbook Y2 Plus live up to expectations? Find out in today’s review!

This device was originally reviewed by Florence George, and this article is based on his evaluation.

Design

The Infinix Inbook Y2 Plus features a sturdy metal chassis, with a lid that resists fingerprints. You can open the laptop with a single finger, which shows that it’s well-balanced. While the keyboard deck does exhibit some minor flex, it’s not a cause for concern. We can confidently say that this laptop boasts the best build quality in the sub-Rs 30,000 category. Weighing in at 1.78 kg, the laptop feels light and easy to carry, thanks to its evenly distributed weight.

Display

The Infinix Inbook comes with a 15.6-inch Full HD display with a peak brightness of 260 nits and an sRGB colour gamut of 83 per cent. While it is not the best or brightest display out there, this display will do just fine for daily use cases and college work as well as watching movies. We wished that the colour gamut could be at least 100 per cent, but due to its bigger size, it gives a more immersive experience compared to other 14-inch laptops that are available in this price range.

Keyboard, Trackpad and I/O

This laptop has a standard keyboard layout with a white backlight. The keyboard is well-designed, with well-spaced keys that provide a decent typing experience. The keys have a solid feel and are not mushy, performing their job well. However, the absence of a fingerprint scanner is a drawback. The trackpad is a huge one with a 6.36-inch glass surface and it works pretty well.

In terms of I/O, Infinix has been generous and offers two USB-C ports, two USB-A 3.0 ports, one HDMI port, an audio combo jack and a Micro SD card slot.

Performance

Now, jumping to performance, it is a mixed bag. On one hand, you get some decent specifications such as an Intel Core i3 1115G4 with a Dual Core CPU, 8GB of DDR4 RAM, and 512GB of SSD. However, the RAM is soldered, so you will not be able to upgrade it in the future. There is an additional M.2 slot, which means you can add another SSD to expand your storage.

Regarding thermals, you get a single fan with two heat pipes. In our GTA 5 test run, we found that the laptop never reached beyond 60 degrees in temperatures, which is pretty impressive. In the gaming aspect, we ran GTA 5 at 1080p native resolution, with medium graphics settings and this laptop gave an average FPS between 45-52, which is good. So, if you are a casual gamer, you can occasionally game on this laptop.

Based on the benchmarks, we can say this laptop is pretty capable of handling all the daily tasks be it crunching an Excel sheet, or typing up an essay on Google Drive. If you are someone who does video editing, unfortunately, this laptop is not for you as it only has 8GB of RAM.

Battery Life

The Infinix Inbook Y2 Plus is equipped with a 50Wh battery, which lasted around 7 hours in our PC Mark video playback test — a fairly decent performance. However, there is one issue: the 65W charger included in the box is quite bulky around the central connecting pin, making it difficult to plug into standard wall outlets. The previous design was much more ergonomic. We hope Infinix takes this feedback into account and provides a better-designed charger in the future.

Verdict

Infinix INBook Y2Plus (2024) powered by Intel i3 1115G4, is suitable for students and working professionals who want a backlit keyboard for basic use. The aluminium chassis offers a robust build, and its dual flash for the webcam works well for video calls. The thin and light form factor adds to its portability. However, the soldered RAM, cramped Shift key, lack of a dedicated numpad, and average display are some of its cons to keep in mind. There are some flaws, but in the bigger picture, this laptop is one of the better ones you can get under Rs 30,000.
