Instagram has announced that it will discontinue end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) messaging on its platform. As a result, the parent company Meta Platforms, along with authorised third parties such as regulators, may be able to access message content. This means the conversations on Instagram will no longer be private, as it was since 2023 and continue to be on its sister platforms, WhatsApp and Facebook, where end-to-end encryption continues to be available. According to Meta, the change will take effect from May 8th, 2026, onwards.
The E2EE gave users peace of mind that no one, other than the sender and receiver, can see their messages. However, The Verge reports, quoting Meta spokesperson Dina El-Kassaby Luce, the platform is discontinuing the feature because “very few people” were using the feature in their DMs.
Users who have opted for encrypted conversations will receive notifications in the app and have the option to download the messages and images before the feature is axed. El-Kassaby Lucy adds that anyone who wants to keep messaging private can easily do that on WhatsApp.
Reports also suggest that the decision to remove end-to-end encryption (E2EE) from Instagram chats is linked to pressure from governments and regulators aimed at strengthening child-safety measures online. When messages are fully encrypted, it becomes significantly harder for authorities and platforms to detect illegal activity or identify harmful content, which has been a major concern for regulators in several countries.
The announcement has also drawn criticism, with many expressing concerns that the move could enable broader surveillance and greater control over private conversations. At present, there is no confirmation on whether messages sent before 8 May will continue to remain end-to-end encrypted or if the change will apply to older chats as well.
Users have the option to export their Instagram information by going to the profile section in the app –> tap on ‘Accounts Centre’ –> select ‘Your information and permissions’ –> ‘Export your information’.
