  • Good battery life

Cons

  • Cameras could have been better
  • Not 5G capable

Motorola has started 2024 with a couple of budget offerings: the Moto G34 5G and the Moto G24 Power. The Moto G34 5G earned the rank of a ‘well-priced phone that impresses on multiple fronts’ in our review. Now, let’s check out the Moto G24 Power. The handset is available in India for under Rs 10,000 and comes with a few trade-offs compared to the Moto G34 5G. For starters, the G24 Power is not 5G capable.

Keep reading to find out who should consider buying the smartphone.

Verdict

The Moto G24 Power may not be the stand-out option in the segment, but it is a smartphone worth considering if you are looking for clean software, decent performance for everyday use, and respectable battery life. That said, the lack of 5G capability on the smartphone might not work in its favour.

Design and display

The Moto G24 Power flaunts a plastic back instead of the vegan leather as seen on other Motorola smartphones lately, including the Moto G34 priced in India for Rs 10,999. Despite its seemingly ordinary appearance, the handset boasts a clean design with a matte finish, keeping fingerprints and smudges at bay. Additionally, there is no cutout for the camera module; instead, a slight hump around the two individual camera rings seamlessly blends in with the rest of the body. The phone is also protected against minor splashes, thanks to the IP52 rating.

The handset weighs only 197 grams, despite rocking a mammoth 6,000mAh battery. This makes the device comfortable to hold for prolonged usage. The fingerprint scanner is on the right spine of the phone where the thumb would naturally lie while holding the smartphone. The scanner is accurate but operates at a slightly slower pace. Additionally, it also doubles up as a power button to turn the Moto G24 Power on and off. There is a USB Type-C port for charging and data transfer at the bottom edge.

As for the viewing experience, the Moto G24 Power is equipped with a 6.56-inch IPS display featuring a centred punch-hole, HD+ resolution, and 90Hz refresh rate. It boasts a pretty standard display for its price, with thick bezels surrounding it and a peak brightness of 563 nits. This may pose a slight difficulty in outdoor visibility under the sun. However, for indoor use, the display offers respectable brightness and colours. Additionally, the display is quite responsive to touch, and the 90Hz feature works fine across the UI and supported apps.

The handset is Widevine L1 certified, making it a good device for multimedia consumption. The handset can stream content in FHD resolution from Netflix and other streaming platforms. It features a single bottom-firing speaker, backed by Dolby Atmos, which gets moderately loud. The handset also comes with a delightful addition – a 3.5mm headphone jack on the top edge.

Cameras

In terms of optics, the Moto G24 Power features a dual-rear camera setup comprising a 50MP primary sensor and a 2MP macro lens. For selfies, the handset is equipped with a 16MP snapper in a punch-hole setup. These are good daylight cameras at best. The results look pleasing, with acceptable details and colour accuracy in well-lit areas. While the dynamic range is a bit underwhelming, the primary camera is quick to focus on subjects and process images.

Indoor or lowlight images are more or less what you expect from a budget smartphone. The main lens struggles with autofocus, and a noticeable noise persists even with night mode. The macro sensor performance looks quite average, lacking both sharpness and detail. The front camera, on the other hand, outputs selfies with a slight smoothening and warm skin tones.

Performance and software

The Moto G24 Power is powered by a budget-friendly MediaTek Helio G85 chipset, coupled with up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of user-expandable storage. Swift performance is not the smartphone’s forte, so you might want to keep it away from graphically demanding games and multitasking. The handset is ideal for basic usage, such as messaging, calling, browsing, and checking social media apps. This is reflected in the phone’s benchmark tests as well.

Nonetheless, you will be quite pleased with the Moto G24 Power software. The handset runs Android 14-based My UX out of the box, which offers a near-stock version of Android. There are hardly any third-party apps, even the proprietary  Motorola apps remain limited. Additionally, the handset boasts several Motorola features such as twist and turn to open the camera app, chop twice to turn on the flash, and a diverse selection of wallpapers. The company claims to provide three years of security updates for the device.

Battery life and charging speeds

The differentiating factor of the Moto G24 Power is its 6,000mAh battery, which given its usage should easily last for a day and then some between charges. While it may not reflect on the PC Mark battery test, I was quite pleased with the smartphone’s battery backup in the real world. It got me somewhere around 8 hours of screen-on-time with browsing, streaming, and navigation.

When it comes to charging, the handset is bundled with a 33W fast charging adapter and a USB Type-A to Type-C charging cable. With this combination, the handset can achieve a full charge from 0 to 100 percent in about two hours, which is the average charging speed for most phones in this price segment.

Final verdict

Priced starting at Rs 8,999, the Moto G24 Power is a good smartphone for buyers who are tight on budget and don’t require 5G connectivity. However, if the latter is a requirement, alternative options like the iTel P55 (review) and Lava Blaze 2 (review) should be considered. Both smartphones are priced under Rs 10,000 and boast 5G capabilities. Additionally, they pack more firepower compared to the Motorola device.

The Moto G24 Power, conversely, offers a clean design with IP rating. The device also excels in providing clean software, good battery life, and dependable functionality.
