Foldables aren’t an unfamiliar territory for Motorola. Long before Samsung and other major smartphone makers established their bestselling foldable lines, the company was making headlines with its OG Razr phones. Motorola later revived the brand with clamshell foldables and expanded into book-style devices earlier this year. Now, the company appears to be following Samsung and Apple into another part of the foldable market with its first wide foldable.
Motorola has already teased the device’s silhouette, while leaked sketches have offered an early look at its design. New reports from Android Headlines now reveals physical mock-ups and detailed specifications of the upcoming device. It’s reportedly known internally as Razr Flex, with Parker said to be its codename, although neither name has been confirmed as the final retail name. A mid-December launch is currently expected.
Motorola wide foldable design
The physical mock-ups shared by Android Headlines show a relatively compact and chunky foldable with a wide inner screen that opens into a landscape-oriented form factor. The rounded edges look closer to the iPhone Duo than the sharper design of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, while the overall proportions give it a noticeably shorter and wider appearance.
Motorola’s biggest compromise appears to be thickness. The foldable is tipped to measure 12.6 mm when folded, compared with 9.7 mm for the Galaxy Z Fold 8, 11.3 mm for the iPhone Duo and 11 mm for the Xiaomi 18 Fold. At 215 gms, it would also be heavier than Samsung’s 201-gm model and the Xiaomi foldable, while being around the same class as Apple’s 214 gms device.
The thicker body could, however, give Motorola more room for the battery. The rear design features two large camera rings inside a horizontal pill-shaped module, while the reported Pantone Coriander and Pantone Dark Botanical Garden finishes give the device a more distinctive look.
Specifications
According to Android Headlines, Motorola’s wide foldable will feature a 6.92-inch OLED inner display with a 1,728 x 2,364-pixel resolution and a 165Hz refresh rate. The 4.97-inch cover display is also expected to use an OLED panel with a 1,736 x 1,140-pixel resolution. The inner display is smaller than the 7.6-inch panels on both the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and iPhone Duo, as well as the 7.58-inch screen on the Xiaomi 18 Fold. Motorola counters that with a significantly higher 165Hz refresh rate, compared with the 120Hz-class panels on its rivals.
The phone is tipped to use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, paired with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. Only the 256GB configuration has been reported so far. A 5,000mAh dual-cell battery is expected, with USB-PD wired charging and 25W Qi2 wireless charging. That is larger than the Galaxy Z Fold 8’s 4,800mAh battery but falls behind the 5,800mAh iPhone Duo and 6,000mAh Xiaomi 18 Fold. Xiaomi also offers 67W wired charging, giving it an advantage in charging speeds.
For cameras, Motorola could feature a 50MP main and 50MP ultrawide camera, along with separate 32MP selfie cameras for both displays. This gives it a higher-resolution ultrawide on paper than the Galaxy Z Fold 8’s 50MP dual-camera setup and the iPhone Duo’s dual 48MP cameras, although the Xiaomi 18 Fold remains considerably more ambitious with its 200MP Leica main camera and periscope telephoto. Other reported specifications include IP48 and IP49 ratings, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0 with LE Audio, Android 17, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner and a dedicated physical AI key.
The foldable is not matching Samsung and Xiaomi on thinness, screen size or battery capacity, but the 165Hz display, Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 and dual 50MP cameras give it a different hardware mix. A competitive price could therefore be important if Motorola wants its first wide foldable to stand out against established options from Samsung, Apple and Xiaomi. If the price is significantly below its rivals, this could be a good option for early adopters prioritising a high refresh rate display over thinness. However, those seeking the thinnest design or longest battery life might want to wait for official reviews or consider existing alternatives.
