Nothing’s first AI smart glasses back on track to launch next year: report

Highlights
  • Nothing is reportedly planning to launch its first AI smart glasses next year.
  • It will house a microphone, speakers, and cameras.
  • The idea had been rejected initially but is reportedly back on track.

Nothing may expand to devices beyond smartphones, according to a new report. The London-based company is popular for its lineup of smartphones offering a unique take on design with a clean and customisable software. It recently expanded to over-ear headphones with two products — the Nothing Headphone (1) and Headphone (a). Nothing’s next product might be its most ambitious yet, as Bloomberg reports the company is working on AI smart glasses.

Nothing’s AI smart glasses launch timeline

These would be Nothing’s most interesting and ambitious product offerings to date, as AI smart glasses are still very niche and very few companies like Meta are offering them. According to the report, Nothing had initially chucked the idea of developing AI smart glasses, but it has been brought back to the table. The report even mentions a launch timeline, which is 2027, so we’re only around a year away from what could be Nothing’s first pair of AI smart glasses.

What to expect from Nothing’s first AI smart glasses

Nothing’s AI smart glasses are said to feature a microphone, speakers, and cameras. The AI part will reportedly be handled by smartphones and the cloud. This could be taken care of by Nothing smartphones, or the accessibility could expand to other Android phones. Since it’s the first-generation smart glasses, the features could be basic, but we still can’t predict without any concrete details. Also, given Nothing’s focus on minimalist design and clean software, their smart glasses could prioritize seamless, unobtrusive interactions, appealing to users who value privacy and simplicity over feature overload.

At present, Meta would be the most popular pick for advancement in AI smart glasses. The Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses are packed with AI features for voice commands to identify objects, translate text, capture photos or videos, and send them on WhatsApp or Messenger. You can also take calls and listen to music with the built-in microphone and speakers. There’s even the Meta Ray-Ban Display that has a built-in display on the glasses to view content, and wrist control for certain actions.

Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2

If Nothing does end up developing a similar product with features that make good practical use, then it could be a good alternative to the Ray-Ban Meta glasses. Pricing for the Nothing AI smart glasses will also be key since this is still a niche area, and a wider appeal may be possible through accessible pricing.

We might see the Nothing AI smart glasses in the first half of next year. But till then, Nothing is said to continue with other regular products that it might have in the pipeline. The concept is quite interesting, and it’s good to see Nothing also venture into this category of smart AI glasses. How it performs in real-world usage, especially with video recording or camera quality, voice commands, and other smart features, is something we can determine only after the product is official.
