Nothing announces the launch date of its second co-created smartphone, the Nothing Phone (3a) Community Edition
London-based tech brand Nothing has announced that its new co-created smartphone, the (3a) Community Edition, will launch on December 9th at 1 PM GMT (6.30 PM IST). This is the second year of the company’s co-creation programme, which brings community members into the design process. This follows the launch of last year’s Phone (2a) Plus Community Edition, which was largely appreciated due to its unique look and limited-edition feel.
Nothing kicked off the Phone (3a) Community Edition project in March to involve young creators directly in building parts of the phone. The company received over 700 submissions across four areas, namely hardware concept and packaging, accessories, lock-screen and wallpaper design, and the marketing campaign. Instead of announcing winners in stages like was the case last time, Nothing selected everyone together and worked with them over a nine-month timeline to create a more consistent final design. The winners were flown to London earlier this year and spent a few months ideating on concepts with Nothing’s design and engineering teams. According to the company, this longer timeline helped give more polish to the project, something the company wanted to improve after feedback from last year’s edition.

Last week, the company shared a teaser with a shiny version of the Pokemon Arcanine. with the names of the winning creators. Nothing has always teased an upcoming phone with a Pokemon, which are mostly their internal codenames.
The Phone (3a) Community Edition will likely retain all the same hardware as the regular Nothing Phone (3a), which launched in India in March 2025 at Rs 22,999 but is now available for Rs 24,999 for 8GB + 128 GB. Specifications included the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 chipset, a 6.7-inch 120Hz AMOLED display, up to 12GB RAM and 256GB storage, a 50MP + 50MP + 8MP rear camera setup, a 32MP front camera, and a 5,000mAh battery with 50W charging.
Last year’s Phone (2a) Plus Community Edition had the same specifications as the regular model but differentiated itself through its glow-in-the-dark finish, packaging, and creator-designed elements. It was launched in a single 12GB + 256GB variant at Rs 29,999, the same price as the Phone (2a) Plus. Buyers liked the idea of a phone that felt more personal and limited availability made it collectible in some ways.
The Phone (3a) Community Edition arrives at a time when smartphone brands are looking for new ways to stand out. With devices going neck-to-neck in terms of specs and pricing, companies are turning to design-led limited editions and community involvement to build emotional appeal. For instance, Realme launched a limited edition design variant of their latest flagship, the Realme GT 8 Pro, co-created with Aston Martin and dubbed the Realme GT 8 Pro Dream Edition. Meanwhile, Nothing is leveraging their community and using creativity and collaboration to differentiate their products in a crowded market.
The Phone (3a) Community Edition should appeal to those who want something more expressive than the usual Phone (3a). Users who appreciate limited-edition designs and Nothing’s creative style might find this edition more interesting. Those who prioritise raw value and performance may look at the standard model or even rivals from other Android OEMs in the segment.
