[Exclusive] Nothing phone to launch in early 2022, Power (1) power bank also in the works
After Nothing Ear (1), the company is working on its first smartphone and Power (1) power bank as well.
Update (August 2025): Nothing launched its first phone, the Nothing Phone (1), in July 2022. The phone stood out for its transparent back, Glyph LED lights, and unique minimalist design, true to the brand’s style. It was powered by a Snapdragon 778G+ chip, backing up those early leaks about the Qualcomm partnership. The brand never released a power bank, and the product was likely just an internal concept that didn’t end up launching. The company has since introduced more phones and audio products, but its first smartphone matched the early rumours pretty well, especially on design and the Qualcomm tie-up.

Nothing made a striking entry with Ear 1 TWS earbuds, with a unique transparent design and ANC (active noise cancellation) at an affordable price point. The startup recently announced a partnership with Qualcomm, which suggested the brand may soon foray into smartphones. Now, 91mobiles has exclusively learned from noted tipster Mukul Sharma that Nothing will launch its first phone by early 2022. This suggests the brand is already silently working on a phone. Details are slim to none about the Nothing phone specifications at the moment. But the brand’s partnership with Qualcomm suggests that the device will be powered by a Snapdragon chipset. Nothing’s philosophy is about offering simple and minimalistic-looking products, which is encapsulated in the Nothing Ear 1’s transparent design. So is a transparent phone on its way?
Back in February, Nothing had acquired Andy Rubin’s Essential company, which launched the Essential Phone 1 back in 2017. The acquisition process was completed on January 6th, 2021. It’s possible that Nothing’s first smartphone could utilise Essential’s tech as all the existing Essential trademarks, logos, and more now belong to Carl Pei’s startup. If that’s the case, Nothing may introduce a Home Smart Hub that Essential was said to be working on and a speaker that would run “Ambient OS”. However, there were speculations that Nothing may have purchased Essential to gain access to its patent catalogue based on “voice-enabled home setup and voice setup instructions”.
Furthermore, Mukul Sharma tells us that a Nothing-branded power bank, called Nothing Power (1), could launch before the Nothing smartphone.
