Redmi 17 5G launched globally with 7,500mAh battery; Redmi 17 4G also joins lineup
Xiaomi has expanded the Redmi 17 series to global markets with the launch of the Redmi 17 5G and Redmi 17 4G in Malaysia. The two budget smartphones share most hardware, including a large 7,500mAh battery, 120Hz display and 50MP rear camera, but differ in connectivity and internal storage technology.
The global Redmi 17 5G is also different from the version launched in China earlier this month. It swaps the Chinese model’s Unisoc T8300 chipset for Qualcomm’s newer Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 processor and gets a substantially larger battery, which is surprising considering China normally bags the “mAhssive” numbers.

Redmi 17 price and availability
The Redmi 17 4G starts at MYR 669 (around Rs 16,000) for 4GB + 128GB. The Redmi 17 5G costs MYR 769 (around Rs 18,000) for the same 4GB + 128GB configuration, while its 4GB + 256GB version is priced at MYR 869 (around Rs 20,000). Both models are currently available through Xiaomi’s online store in Malaysia. The Redmi 17 4G comes in Black, Deep Blue, Lotus Purple and Oak Green, while the 5G model is offered in Black, Deep Blue and Vivid Orange.
Specifications and features
Both Redmi 17 models feature a 6.9-inch HD+ LCD panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, up to 240Hz touch sampling, 825 nits peak brightness and Gorilla Glass 7i protection. They also carry an IP64 rating and run HyperOS 3 based on Android 16. The 5G model uses a 4nm Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 chipset clocked at up to 2.4GHz, paired with 4GB LPDDR4x RAM and up to 256GB UFS 2.2 storage. The 4G version uses a 12nm MediaTek Helio G91-Ultra with 4GB RAM and slower eMMC 5.1 storage.
Both phones have a 50MP rear camera and 8MP selfie camera, with video recording up to 1080p at 30fps. The 7,500mAh battery supports 45W wired charging and 22.5W reverse charging. The global model is also a major step up from the Chinese Redmi 17 5G in battery and charging. The China version has a 6,300mAh battery, 15W charging and a 13MP rear camera, although it offers up to 6GB RAM.
For context, the Redmi 15 5G offered a more capable 6.9-inch FHD+ 144Hz display and Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 chipset, alongside a 7,000mAh battery with 33W charging. The Redmi 17 5G therefore, like all next-gen phones, focuses more on battery capacity and newer software than on upgrading display resolution or the chipset.
The Redmi 17 5G could launch in India soon, as the phone was allegedly spotted on BIS a few weeks ago. The Redmi 17 5G looks more compelling than the 4G version if 5G connectivity and faster UFS storage matter. The 4G model makes more sense only for buyers prioritising a lower upfront price and long battery life over performance and storage speed.
