Top-end Redmi Note 17 Pro Max tipped to get an entry-tier Snapdragon chip

Redmi Note series’ fans may be in for some disappointing news. The series spent the past few years moving up the performance ladder but the next top model could reverse that trend. The Redmi Note 17 Pro Max, due to be unveiled on August 27th, is tipped to use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 6 Gen 5. The information comes ahead of the launch and hasn’t yet been officially confirmed by the brand.

Redmi Note 17 Pro Max chipset

The Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 is a newer Qualcomm platform, but the Snapdragon 6 family sits below the Snapdragon 7 series. That means the Note 17 Pro Max could end up with a lower-tier processor than its immediate predecessor, at least on paper. That would be unusual for the top model in the Note range. The progression over the past few generations has generally been toward more capable hardware. The Note 12 Turbo used the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2, while the Note 14 Pro+ and Note 15 Pro+ used the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 and 7s Gen 4, respectively.

The change comes as smartphone makers face higher component costs and ongoing pressure around chip and memory supply. It could be part of Redmi’s effort to keep the Note 17 Pro Max’s overall cost under control, although there is no official confirmation that pricing or supply constraints are behind the decision.

However, a lower Snapdragon series does not automatically mean poor performance. The Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 is a newer platform, and its real-world performance will depend on its CPU and GPU configuration, cooling and how Xiaomi tunes the phone.

If the phone combines the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 with strong cameras, a high-quality display and a large battery at a lower price, the processor could be a reasonable compromise. But if its pricing moves into territory occupied by Snapdragon 7-series or comparable MediaTek-powered phones, buyers may have more reason to look closely at performance. Buyers upgrading from the Note 15 Pro+ should therefore wait for the full specifications and benchmarks before assuming the new model will be a performance upgrade.
