Samsung has begun teasing what appears to be the long-rumoured major redesign for its next-generation foldable smartphone ahead of its upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event. Through a series of short videos on social media, the company has, for the first time, teased a noticeably wider foldable, which rumour mills have been calling the “Galaxy Z Fold Wide.”
But don’t get your hopes high up just yet. The teasers stop short of revealing the phone itself and instead, Samsung uses unusually proportioned everyday objects, including a broken chocolate bar and an incomplete puzzle, to suggest a new aspect ratio. The clips point to a shorter and wider folded design that could make the outer display feel more like a conventional smartphone while also delivering a wider viewing experience when the device is unfolded.
Samsung Unpacked: devices expected to launch
Samsung is expected to unveil multiple foldables at its next Galaxy Unpacked event. According to leaks, the lineup could include the flagship Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra (the standard-sized book-style foldable we’ve seen all this while) alongside the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8, which is actually tipped to be Samsung’s new wide foldable.
Reports claim the Galaxy Z Fold 8 will weigh just 201 gms, making it lighter than several flagship smartphones despite being a book-style foldable. The device is also tipped to measure 4.5 mm when unfolded and 9.7 mm when folded.
The standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 is expected to feature a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X inner display with a boxier 4:3 aspect ratio, paired with a wider 5.5-inch cover screen in a 16:10 aspect ratio. The leak suggests Samsung will reserve its traditional taller Fold design for the more premium Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, giving buyers two distinct form factors for the first time.
Samsung’s redesign comes as the foldable market continues to evolve. Rivals such as Huawei, Honor and Google have gradually adopted wider cover displays to make their foldables easier to use when closed. Samsung has largely stuck to its narrower design over the years, making this rumoured shift one of the biggest changes to the Galaxy Z Fold series in recent memory. Apple is also rumoured to come with a more passport-style looking iPhone Ultra, signalling a shift in the market.
If the wider design delivers a more practical everyday experience without compromising portability, it could address one of the biggest criticisms of foldables. Buyers should look out for the launch offers shortly after unpacked to get the most value out of Samsung’s new form factor.
