Vodafone Idea (Vi) and BSNL are quietly exploring a partnership that could change how they build their networks from here on. According to a Mint report, the two are in early talks to share not just towers, but also fibre and possibly even spectrum, moving into territory that telecom operators don’t usually touch unless they really have to.
This comes at a time when Vi is still trying to steady itself after losing users to Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, while lining up a Rs 45,000 crore plan to improve its network. BSNL, meanwhile, has been busy rolling out 4G but is still catching up in cities, with 5G not quite ready yet. Both need to expand, but neither has the room to spend like the top two players.
So instead of building everything twice, the thinking seems to be sharing. BSNL brings deeper reach in rural and semi-urban areas while Vi has a stronger presence in cities. Putting those together, the telcos can start covering more ground without the same level of investment. Fibre sharing could quietly fix one of the more frustrating issues of unstable data by improving back-end capacity. Spectrum sharing, if it actually happens, would go a step further, letting both use their airwaves more efficiently.
This isn’t a quick fix. As the report notes, even the Department of Telecommunications is treating this as something that needs closer evaluation. Active sharing, especially spectrum, is more complicated than it sounds, and getting it right will take time.
For users, the changes, if they come, will likely be gradual. Fewer patchy spots, more stable data, maybe a wider spread of 5G beyond the usual big-city zones. Nothing dramatic on day one, but noticeable over time. If you’re picking a network right now, Jio and Airtel still make the safer case for speed and reliability. But if you’re already on Vi or BSNL, this could be one of those behind-the-scenes shifts that slowly improves your everyday experience.
