Xiaomi 17 Ultra leak hints at a redesigned camera setup with only three sensors
The Xiaomi 17 Ultra, which will be the top model in the upcoming Xiaomi 17 series, is in the news after a new leak has revealed some details about its photographic abilities, which is the USP of the model. There’s still no official word on when it’s launching, but fresh leaked images of its photography kit have revealed that Xiaomi could be moving away from the quad-camera layout of the Xiaomi 15 Ultra.
At first thought, that sounds like a downgrade. The leaked images show a module with four cutouts, but if you look closely, only three of them actually hold lenses, suggesting there would be only three cameras on the Xiaomi 17 Ultra. That immediately distinguishes it from the Xiaomi 15 Ultra’s four-camera setup with dual telephoto cameras, and even from that of rivals like the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra. However, Xiaomi’s change appears to be deliberate rather than a compromise.

According to a report by XiaomiTime, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra will move away from the numbers game and focus more on sensor quality and size instead. Internally codenamed Nezha, the device’s camera setup includes a 50MP primary sensor, a 200MP telephoto camera, and a 50MP ultra-wide lens. The front might carry a 50MP OV50ME sensor. While you lose one lens compared to the 15 Ultra, the company seems to be investing in bigger, more capable sensors, especially for zoom.
The highlight of the setup is expected to be the 200MP telephoto unit. Earlier leaks suggested it may use a new 4×4 RMSC technology which lets the camera zoom at multiple levels without losing quality, and even take close-up macro photos using the telephoto lens. If that works as claimed, Xiaomi could push ahead in long-range clarity, an area where Samsung’s Galaxy Ultra phones have traditionally held an edge. So the real competition here might not be about how many cameras you have, but how versatile that single telephoto sensor can be.
In comparison to the Xiaomi 15 Ultra, which used two telephoto cameras giving users 3x and 5x optical levels, the 17 Ultra appears to be combining those strengths into a single, more powerful lens. If executed well, it could offer more flexibility without relying on multiple lenses. However, if the processing isn’t strong enough, Samsung may still hold the advantage.
The photography kit leak also shows a detachable camera grip, available in beige and black, complete with a physical shutter button. Xiaomi introduced this with the 15 Ultra.
Regarding availability, the phone is reportedly in testing in India, while a China launch is rumoured for December or early January. A global rollout should follow soon after, possibly alongside other Xiaomi 17 series phones. The Xiaomi 15 Ultra launched in India in March alongside the Xiaomi 15 at Rs 1,09,999. If the leaks hold true, Xiaomi could be shifting from a more-is-better strategy towards one that focusses on quality.
If you’re considering buying the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, the move from a quad-camera to a triple-camera layout may seem like a step back. But if Xiaomi actually delivers on its promise of bigger, more sophisticated sensors, you could find real gains in zoom clarity, detail and overall photo quality. It might be a good pick if you value cleaner long-range shots or if you use your phone as your main camera. However, it may not be ideal for those who are accustomed to frequently switching between many different focal lengths, as it might limit their flexibility. You may want to wait until real-world reviews or look at a phone with multiple optical zoom lenses, such as Samsung’s Ultra models.
