After Pro and Pro Max, the Xiaomi 17 series could get a new ‘Max’ member with a record-setting battery

Highlights
  • Xiaomi has changed its nomenclature for its flagship series this year.
  • The Xiaomi 17 series launched in China in September last year with the Xiaomi 17, Xiaomi 17 Pro and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max.
  • The Xiaomi 17 Max could have the biggest battery seen on a Xiaomi phone.

Xiaomi’s current flagship Xiaomi 17 series may soon get a new member with a focus on the most-contested smartphone spec these days: battery capacity. According to new leaks from China, the upcoming Xiaomi 17 Max could feature an 8,000mAh battery, which will make it the largest ever seen on a Xiaomi flagship. This would make the phone stand out in a lineup that includes some models with secondary rear displays.

Tipster Digital Chat Station reports that the 17 Max will join the Xiaomi 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, and 17 Ultra as the fifth device in the series. The key highlight is the battery. With an 8,000mAh cell, the 17 Max is tipped to surpass the Redmi Turbo 4 Pro’s 7,550mAh battery and become the biggest in Xiaomi’s current catalogue. The phone is also said to support 100W wired and 50W wireless charging.

For comparison, the standard Xiaomi 17 uses a 7,000mAh battery, the 17 Pro has 6,300mAh, and the 17 Pro Max reaches 7,500mAh. Those figures align with current flagship standards, but just when we were getting used to the new numbers, OnePlus already pushed battery sizes further, with its recent Turbo series going up to 9,000mAh. In that context, 8,000mAh is notable, though not record-setting. Having said that, it’s important to note that we don’t know about the global availability of these devices and some of them tend to launch with reduced capacities outside of the home country due to certification issues.

Xiaomi also seems to be rethinking how it names its flagships this year. In the past, the company largely stuck to standard, Pro and Ultra models, with T-series flagships launching later as mid-cycle upgrades. This time, the Xiaomi 17 lineup has gone a step further. Alongside the Pro and Ultra, Xiaomi has already introduced a Pro Max variant, and the rumoured 17 Max adds yet another tier.

Being a non-Pro variant, the Xiaomi 17 Max is expected to omit the secondary rear display found on the 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max. Its design is reportedly closer to the standard 17, with a simpler rear layout. On the camera side, DCS suggests a periscope telephoto sensor that could outperform the 17’s setup, while still sitting below the 17 Ultra. The main camera is expected to use the OmniVision Light Fusion 950 sensor, similar to the one on the 17, with incremental processing improvements.

In terms of hardware, the 17 Max is said to run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset. It will reportedly feature a flat OLED display measuring around 6.8 to 6.9 inches, with thin bezels.

The Xiaomi 17 Max is rumoured to launch in China in April, with no confirmation yet on a global release. If it does expand beyond the domestic market, it may appeal to users looking for longer battery life without moving away from flagship-level specifications. Users seeking advanced camera features or premium extras may still prefer the Pro or Ultra variants.
