Moto g max 5G Expert Review Summary
Expert Rating:
8.0/10
Verdict
The Moto G Max gets a lot going for it. It addresses the limited software support we highlighted on the Moto G57 Power and G77 Power, while also offering a likeable design, a good display, immersive stereo speakers, serviceable cameras, and dependable battery life. However, the smartphone could have lived up to its `Max` moniker better with an AMOLED panel instead of an LCD and a slightly larger battery.
Pros
- Good display
- Impressive battery life
- Stereo speakers
- Reliable performance
Cons
- Rear cameras need improvement
- LCD instead of AMOLED display
Design: likeable
+
The Moto G Max retains the familiar G-series design but stands out with its serene Alaskan Blue finish and satin-textured back. Despite being slightly heavy, the phone remains manageable, and useful additions such as a 3.5mm headphone jack, MIL-STD-810H durability, and IP64 rating add to its practicality.

Display and audio: good enough, but lacks the edge
+
The Moto G Max delivers a sharp 120Hz viewing experience with decent colours and a more immersive stereo speaker setup. However, its LCD panel falls short of AMOLED rivals in viewing angles, brightness, and overall vibrancy.

Performance and software: smooth
+
The Moto G Max delivers dependable performance for basic usage, handling multitasking and casual gaming without noticeable lag. Hello UI remains feature-rich, though it has moved away from Motorola's traditionally clean Android experience.

Cameras: saved by selfies
+
The Moto G Max's camera setup looks impressive on paper, but the rear cameras struggle with exposure, colours, dynamic range, and detail. The 32MP selfie camera is the highlight, delivering impressive results.

Battery and charging: reliable
+
The Moto G Max's 7,000mAh battery comfortably delivers a full day of usage and performs well in synthetic tests. The 33W charging is the bigger drawback, taking around an hour and a half for a full top-up.
