The best camera smartphone of 2025: a blind camera comparison between 6 flagships

Every year, the biggest question in the smartphone world is simple: which phone has the best camera? And this year, the competition is heating up as the trend of larger sensors and improved AI-powered image processing becomes mainstream.

We’ve got brand-new contenders like the iPhone 17 Pro Max, which has a new 48MP telephoto lens with a 56 percent larger sensor than last year. Meanwhile, the Pixel 10 Pro XL (review) introduces “Pro-Res Zoom”, an advanced feature which claims to significantly improve its digital zoom capabilities up to 100x. These new devices are ready to challenge established powerhouses of 2025, like the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, OPPO Find X8 Pro, Vivo X200 Pro, and Xiaomi 15 Ultra.

But when you’re comparing photos, it is easy to be swayed by brand loyalty or the hype surrounding a new launch. Does that new flagship phone really take better pictures, or do you just think it does? That is exactly what we’re here to find out!

We took all six of these flagship phones and shot the same scenes, side-by-side, in a variety of lighting conditions. Now, we’re presenting the results to you completely blind. There are no labels, no logos, and no hints. The goal is simple: to strip away all the marketing and brand bias and let the images speak for themselves.

Your job is to vote for the photo that you think looks best in each scene and select the relevant option in the respective polls. Once the votes are in, we’ll reveal which phone took which picture and the true camera champion of 2025, chosen by you. Let’s get started!

Table of Contents

Daylight

For this daylight scene, you should focus on factors like dynamic range, colour, and sharpness. Pay attention to how each phone balances the bright sky with the darker shadows under the building, and which image’s colours and details appeal most to you. A good image ensures that both the brightest and darkest areas of the scene are properly exposed, retaining detail throughout the image.

Ultrawide

In this ultrawide shot, notice the distortion at the edges and overall sharpness. Also, consider how the colours appear in the image and if the shadows and highlights are balanced well. Effective distortion control makes straight lines at the edge of the frame actually look straight and does not have a “fish-eye” look.

Portrait

When judging these portrait images, focus on three main areas: how realistic the skin tones are, the quality of the background blur (bokeh), and the precision of the edge detection around the subject. What you’re looking for is a clean separation between the person and the background, which is the key to a professional-looking portrait.

You might note that some images are zoomed in more than others. This is because some of these devices do not have a common focal length for portraits, as it varies between 3.0x and 4.0x optical zoom. To keep things consistent and ensure the telephoto lens was utilised for each image, we chose focal lengths between 3.7x and 4x for every shot.

Selfie

For the selfie comparison, you can evaluate each photo for its skin tone reproduction and its ability to retain fine facial details without introducing softness or skin brightening. The goal here is a realistic selfie that still looks like you, without aggressive face-tuning.

5x Zoom

In this 5x zoom shot, the test is all about clarity and detail retention. Compare the sharpness of the text on the sign, the texture in the tree leaves, and overall colour accuracy. This is a good test of how usable the telephoto lens is for capturing subjects that are far away.

10x Zoom

This comparison is just an extension of the previous one. With a more aggressive zoom level, you can compare the clarity of the text on the sign and how well each phone controls image noise and artefacts. This really separates the phones with great computational zoom from the ones that are just digitally cropping.

Low light

In this challenging scene, assess how each phone manages the difficult aspects of night photography. Look for control over light sources and lens flare, the amount of visible noise in the sky, and how much detail is preserved in the shadows. Good performance here means you get a properly exposed, balanced image with well-controlled light sources.

What’s next?

And that concludes the test. Thank you for taking the time to examine the photos and cast your votes. In the coming days, we will compile all the poll results to determine which phone is the true camera champion of 2025.

Our follow-up analysis will reveal which phone is which and explore the final results in detail. If camera quality is your top priority for a new smartphone, we recommend waiting for that breakdown before making a buying decision. Make sure to cast your votes, and come back in some time for the final verdict.
