Believe it or not, the handset has quietly emerged as one of the strongest contenders in the sub-Rs 20,000 segment. On paper, the Galaxy M17 5G packs fairly standard specifications. It debuted at a starting price of Rs 12,499 but now retails for Rs 17,999 following a series of price hikes, a trend that has affected much of the smartphone industry. Even so, the Galaxy M17 5G continues to offer excellent value for money, often outshining many of its newer rivals in the segment.

Gone are the days when technology would become more affordable over time. What works for the Samsung Galaxy M17 5G
Vibrant, crisp display
The Samsung Galaxy M17 5G gets a lot right for its price, starting with the display. At a time when several manufacturers have switched to lower-resolution HD+ LCD panels to keep costs in check, Samsung continues to offer a 6.67-inch FHD+ AMOLED display. As we noted in our review, the panel delivers vibrant colours and sufficient sharpness, making it one of the better displays in the segment. While the waterdrop notch may look dated, it is still in line with what several competing smartphones in this price bracket offer.
Versatile cameras
The Galaxy M17 also stands out with its camera system. It features a triple rear camera setup comprising a 50MP primary sensor, a 5MP ultra-wide lens, and a 2MP macro camera. While the sensor sizes may not seem particularly impressive on paper, the inclusion of an ultra-wide camera adds a level of versatility that has largely disappeared from this segment due to rising component costs. To make matters worse, newer rivals such as the OnePlus N6x ship with a downgraded 13MP primary camera, a trend that could soon become the norm across budget smartphones.
The Samsung smartphone also features a 13MP front-facing camera, which is superior to most offerings in the segment. The M17 is capable of delivering natural outputs, if not detailed, in well-lit environments.

However, these are not the biggest reasons that make the Samsung Galaxy M17 a compelling buy for its price. That distinction goes to its software. The smartphone ships with Android 15-based One UI 7 out of the box and is already eligible for an OTA update to Android 16 with One UI 8. More importantly, Samsung has promised six years of Android OS and security updates, ensuring the Galaxy M17 remains supported until 2031. This level of long-term software support is virtually unmatched in the segment and significantly enhances the phone’s overall value.
Decent performer, useful features
How well the Galaxy M17 holds up over the long term remains to be seen. For now, it should offer enough performance for everyday tasks. The smartphone is powered by Samsung’s 5G-capable Exynos 1330 chipset, which benchmarking tests reveal is on par with other offerings in the segment, including newer entrants. The smartphone’s 5,000mAh battery, however, remains modest compared to its rivals. Having said that, given its focus on everyday use, it should comfortably last a full day on a single charge under typical usage, if not longer than that.
Other highlights of the phone include a loud bottom-firing speaker, NFC for digital payments, user-expandable storage, 25W fast charging, flagship-grade Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection, and an IP54 splash and dust resistance rating.
Final thoughts
The Samsung Galaxy M17 5G outshines many of its rivals with its FHD+ AMOLED display, an ultra-wide camera, and class-leading software support, features that are now more commonly found in smartphones priced above Rs 30,000. While its battery capacity remains slightly underwhelming, the Galaxy M17 5G continues to be an easy recommendation for buyers seeking a balanced smartphone.
However, we recommend choosing at least the 6GB RAM variant for better long-term usability.
