Samsung Galaxy Watch9 and Watch Ultra2 first impressions: bigger steps towards better health

Samsung has been trying to position its Health platform as an all-encompassing, holistic platform for well-being, and over the years, its wearables have ably supported that mission by acting as advanced trackers that capture data reliably. Advanced health features combined with the power of AI have been the differentiator, and the latest Galaxy Watch9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra2 carry that mission forward. 

Hands-on with the Galaxy Watch9

While the Galaxy Watch9 is the lighter of the two, designed for effortless all-day wearing, its capabilities cannot be taken lightly. Sticking to the same design language as before, it uses an aluminium casing and signature cushion design in typical Samsung style. Thanks to the new Snapdragon Wear Elite platform powering it, it promises smooth, lag-free usage, and in the brief period that I got to play with it, the UI certainly seemed quite zippy. 

As far as the specs are concerned, the Samsung Galaxy Watch9 comes in two sizes: a 44mm model (available in Graphite and Silver) weighing a lightweight 34.0g, and a 40mm model (Graphite and Cream) weighing just 31.5g. Both variants feature a Sapphire Crystal-protected Super AMOLED display capable of up to 3,000 nits peak brightness, with the 44mm sporting a 1.47-inch (480×480) panel and the 40mm housing a 1.34-inch (438×438) screen. The Watch9 packs 2GB of memory and 32GB of storage, running Wear OS 7 layered with One UI 9 Watch. Battery capacity stands at 445mAh for the 44mm model and 390mAh for the 40mm model, both supporting WPC-based wireless Fast Charging.

For fitness and health monitoring, the Watch9 is equipped with the Samsung BioActive Sensor (combining Optical Bio-signal, Electrical Heart Signal, and BIA) alongside temperature, accelerometer, barometer, gyro, geomagnetic, and light sensors. Rounding out the hardware, it offers comprehensive connectivity via LTE, Bluetooth 6.0, dual-band Wi-Fi, NFC, and dual-frequency GPS, supported by 5ATM + IP68 water/dust resistance and MIL-STD-810H durability certification.

Checking out the Watch Ultra2

Moving on to the richer cousin, the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra2. It comes as the successor to the Watch Ultra, Samsung’s ultimate high-performance smartwatch built for extreme outdoor sports and continuous wellness monitoring. Housed in a shock-resistant titanium casing that is 12 percent thinner than its predecessor, it packs a massive 800mAh battery, which is a 35% capacity jump over the previous model. This is good news, since the OG model was rather large and bulky for wearing 24/7.

The Ultra2’s 1.52-inch (498×498) Super AMOLED display is protected by Sapphire Crystal and boasts a world-first 5,000 nits peak brightness, while the Snapdragon Wear Elite platform powers its capabilities. Designed for extreme environments, it carries IP69K, 10 ATM, and EN13319 certifications, enabling pro-level diving capabilities with real-time tracking of depth, water temperature, and safe dive limits (developed in partnership with Mares). For endurance athletes, it introduces a dedicated Trail Run mode (tracking elevation and terrain impact) and Nutrition Alert for real-time hydration guidance based on sweat loss. Anchored by the upgraded BioActive sensor, it also delivers Samsung’s AI health intelligence suite, including sleep apnea detection, continuous Vitals alerts, heart health scoring, and daily cardio load tracking.

To give you a rundown of the specs, the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra2 comes in a single 47mm size option (available in Titanium Silver and Titanium Gray), weighing 61.5g. It runs Wear OS 7 with One UI 9 Watch. Health and fitness tracking are powered by the Samsung BioActive Sensor (combining Optical Bio-signal, Electrical Heart Signal, and BIA) alongside dedicated sensors for temperature, acceleration, barometric pressure, gyroscopic motion, geomagnetism, and ambient light. Connectivity options include LTE, Bluetooth 6.0, dual-band Wi-Fi, NFC, and L1+L5 Dual-Frequency GPS, backed by 10ATM + IP69K water and dust resistance, MIL-STD-810H military durability, and EN13319 diving certification.

To sum it up

Both watches seem to be taking their health and fitness tracking responsibilities quite seriously, and while the hardware seems on point, the Samsung Health platform is looking like a solid and capable health companion too. Looking well-rounded from an aethetics PoV as well, both the Watch9 and Watch Ultra2 do look quite compelling, based on my quick hands-on.
